Main Purpose and Function

The Planning Analyst plays a crucial role in supporting the Community Planning Division in the development and implementation of the City's community and area plans. This position is responsible for providing technical, analytical, and graphic support to the team, with a focus on streamlining and consolidating existing downtown policies. The Planning Analyst will work closely with the team to research, conduct data collection and analysis, provide graphic support and mapping, draft presentations, and organize public consultations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conducting research on planning and policy issues, including sourcing and developing property, demographic, and statistical information to support planning initiatives.
  • Supporting qualitative and quantitative analysis of environmental, economic, and demographic data for use in projects and evaluating the effectiveness of city community plans.
  • Collecting, managing, and interpreting various sources of data, including the regular use of GIS, MapInfo, and ArcGIS software.
  • Developing and conducting in-depth research and analyses on topics related to land use and policy.
  • Writing reports and technical papers for senior staff in the Planning, Urban Design, and Sustainability department.
  • Organizing and facilitating public consultation processes, including developing informational and graphic materials for public open houses, workshops, and Council reports.
  • Summarizing public consultation processes and survey results for senior staff and the public to inform next steps in the planning program.
  • Maintaining and updating websites and coordinating social media outreach.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a university degree in urban planning or a related field, with some professional experience in a related field. Membership or eligibility for membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners is preferred. The candidate should have considerable knowledge of the City's community and area plans, zoning and land use regulations, and environmental/sustainability-related policies. Strong organizational and project management skills, sound research and analytical abilities, and advanced graphic skills are also essential.
