Locomotive Operations Specialist

The Locomotive Operations Specialist plays a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of trains at CN. This position is responsible for training, supervising, and monitoring Locomotive Engineers, Student Locomotive Engineers, and Conductor Locomotive Operators in locomotive operations, train handling, and general locomotive engineer responsibilities.
Main Responsibilities:
- Train, supervise, monitor, and coach LE, SLE, and CLO regarding locomotive operation, train handling, and general locomotive engineer responsibilities
- Support and conduct SLE, Manager Locomotive Engineer Training (MLET), CLO, Locomotive Event Recorder (LER), Distributed Power (DP), Trip Optimizer (TO), and other courses and training as required
- Be involved in classroom training, on-the-job training, check rides, and ride-alongs on trains and counsel over telephone or voice radio
- Utilize locomotive simulator in some training programs
- Train LEs regarding any new technologies that are introduced
- Develop and sustain the right employee behaviors with feedback, recognition, reinforcement, and coaching
- Make recommendations for cost control and asset utilization in planning and execution of training
Additionally, the Locomotive Operations Specialist is responsible for analyzing and interpreting LER data for accident or incident investigations, monitoring LE and crew performance, and productivity analysis. This involves obtaining, analyzing, and interpreting LER data, as well as requiring development of superior knowledge of LER and Locomotive Digital Video Recorder (LDVR) operation and computer programs.
The role also involves providing guidance to Divisional Officers as a Subject Matter Expert (SME), providing guidance and assistance on locomotive operation, train handling matters, and LE's role and concerns. This includes interacting and making recommendations to Transportation Managers, Assistant Superintendents, Superintendents, General Managers, Senior Vice-President, Rail Traffic Control (RTC) Centre personnel, Crew Management Centre (CMC) Centre personnel, Labour Relations, Risk Management, etc.
Furthermore, the Locomotive Operations Specialist is responsible for planning and supporting Engine Service Officer duties, including prioritizing and planning ESO Field duties, adjusting plans on short notice to accommodate sudden occurrences or disruptions, maintaining SLE training records, and maintaining records regarding train separations.
The role requires being available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidents and involves occasional travel (30%) within Canada and the United States. The incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and stress, and be able to work in various types of weather and environmental conditions.
Requirements:
- Between 3 to 5 years of service as a qualified LE in good standing
- High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED)
- Railway Employee Qualification Standards for Operating Crew Regulation (QSOC) and Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR) qualification
- Valid Driver's Licence
Technical Skills/Knowledge:
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Advanced knowledge of Operating Rules and Regulations
- Knowledge of freight car and locomotive air brakes and how they operate
- Fluently bilingual, both written and verbal (English, French)
