Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Legal Advisor to join our team at the University of Waterloo. This is a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic environment and contribute to the development of our privacy and compliance framework.

About the Role

This role will provide strategic legal advice to senior leaders, faculties, schools, and administrative units across the institution, focusing on privacy and compliance matters. The successful candidate will have expertise in privacy law and be responsible for ensuring that the University meets its obligations under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA).

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic legal advice on privacy-related matters, including leadership and strategic development, compliance, and risk management;
  • Maintain extensive knowledge of provincial and federal information and privacy laws, including regulations and legislation;
  • Develop and maintain processes, systems, and strategic direction for FIPPA responsibilities;
  • Offer consultation and advice on intellectual property law and commercial issues;
  • Provide oversight and direction to LIS administrative staff, including managing internal LIS projects;
  • Keep up to date with new legislation and regulations as well as caselaw impacting the post-secondary sector;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the General Counsel.
Requirements
  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited university;
  • Licensed to practice law in Ontario and member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario;
  • Relevant professional designation from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) or other recognized professional body;
  • Minimum 5 years of experience practicing law and providing legal advice to complex organizations;
  • 3+ years of experience working with access to information and protection of privacy responding to access requests, privacy complaints, information breaches, and inquiries from the community;
  • Strong critical thinking skills to understand complex fact patterns, identify legal issues and risks, and provide timely advice;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and resourcefully;
  • Proven ability as a strong communicator to deliver advice that is clear and practical, both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to meet common objectives, improve outcomes, and provide exceptional advice;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and treat sensitive information with discretion.
Compensation and Benefits

The estimated salary for this position is $120,000 - $150,000 per annum, commensurate with experience. We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision coverage, as well as a generous retirement savings plan.
