Lead University Privacy Lawyer

Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled Lead University Privacy Lawyer to join our team at the University of Waterloo. As a key member of our Legal and Immigration Services department, you will be responsible for providing expert legal advice on privacy-related matters to ensure compliance with provincial and federal information and privacy laws.
About the Role:
- You will provide strategic guidance on Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) responsibilities and develop processes to maintain compliance.
- With your extensive knowledge of University operations, you will identify and mitigate legal risks, ensuring that the University's Strategic Plan is protected and its reputation is preserved.
- You will work closely with senior leaders, faculties, schools, and administrative units to manage legal issues and develop strategies to minimize risk.
- As an expert in access to information and protection of privacy, you will respond to access requests, privacy complaints, information breaches, and inquiries from the community.
- You will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to achieve common objectives and provide exceptional advice.
- Your ability to maintain confidentiality and treat sensitive information with discretion will be essential in this role.
Requirements:
- A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree is required, and licensure to practice law in Ontario with membership in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario is mandatory.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience practicing law and providing legal advice to complex organizations is necessary, with 3+ years of experience working with access to information and protection of privacy.
- A strong working knowledge of provincial and federal information and privacy laws, as well as higher education or public sector experience, is preferred.
- You must possess significant breadth of knowledge related to University operations, including knowledge of University policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- An extensive working knowledge and interpretation of FIPPA, regulations, and legislation, along with excellent critical thinking skills, are essential for this position.
What We Offer:
The University of Waterloo offers a competitive salary of approximately $120,000 - $150,000 per year, depending on experience, plus benefits, including a comprehensive health and dental plan, pension plan, and opportunities for professional development.
