About the Position:

This is a dynamic role that requires a strong background in veterinary medicine and shelter animal welfare. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing shelter medicine programs, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, and representing the BC SPCA in the veterinary community.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement shelter medicine policies and protocols to maintain and enhance animal health and welfare.
  • Collaborate with Community Animal Centre Managers, ACS Senior Managers, and other members of the BC SPCA departments to achieve shared goals.
  • Represent the BC SPCA in the veterinary community, including government relations and media communications.
  • Attend clinical shifts at BC SPCA hospitals or clinics to maintain certification and stay up-to-date on best practices.
  • Provide guidance and support to Community Animal Centres on shelter animal health assessment and shelter medicine best practices.
  • Track and report on the implementation and maintenance of shelter medicine policies and procedures.
  • Consult on Animal Protection Services cases and provide expert testimony as required.
  • Manage the provincial ringworm culture and response program.
  • Develop infectious disease outbreak remediation plans.
  • Provide data and support to the Health and Safety team to inform decision-making on human and animal safety.
  • Build and maintain relationships with the veterinary community, government veterinarians, and other stakeholders.
Qualifications:
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent and membership in the College of Veterinarians of BC.
  • Formal shelter medicine training and 5+ years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts to a non-technical audience.
  • Exceptional leadership and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate and build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Office Suite and online meeting software.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and multitask.
