Job Summary
Infection Control Practitioner is responsible for maintaining records of all significant infections, interpreting diagnostic tests and data to identify risks and trends, educating staff, patients, families, physicians and other associates in Infection Prevention and Control Practices. The ICP will participate in the mission, vision and goals of the St. Joseph's Healthcare/Infection Prevention and Control Program.

Main Responsibilities
Supports the Infection Prevention and Control Program for St. Joseph's Healthcare at all sites by:

1. Following national guidelines/best practices for the surveillance of nosocomial infections
2. Reporting communicable infectious diseases according to the Public Health Act (HPPA)
3. Reviewing patient records to ascertain clinical signs and symptoms for infection, clinical interventions and requirements for transmission-based precautions
4. Interpreting significant clinical laboratory reports on a daily basis for ongoing surveillance/trends
5. Interviewing hospital patients or out-patients as necessary to complete the patient-specific data
6. Calculating infection control statistics such as averages, percentages and rates in support of the infection prevention and control program
7. Investigating all infection clusters and outbreaks with interventions directed at infection prevention
8. Consulting for infection risk assessment, prevention and control strategies to departments
9. Participating in the development and maintenance of Infection Prevention and Control protocols/standards/policy and procedures
10. Providing after hours and weekend on-call services as required and occasional weekends on site coverage

Skill Requirements
The ideal candidate should have a recognized basic training course in Infection Control, two years experience in Infection Prevention and Control, and a Certificate in Infection Control (CIC) by the Certification Board of Infection Control.
