Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Biochemical Genetics Specialist to join our team at Provincial Laboratory Medicine Services (PLMS) in Vancouver, BC.

Estimated Salary: $63,000 - $93,000 per yearResponsibilities
  1. Perform Advanced Lab Procedures: Conduct biochemical genetics procedures, including amino acid, organic acid, and acylcarnitine analysis using techniques like liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, tandem mass spectrometry, gas chromatography mass spectrometry, advanced enzymology, and tissue culture.
  2. Maintain Equipment and Supplies: Operate laboratory equipment, apparatus, and instrumentation, maintain equipment through preventative maintenance protocols, and notify supervisors of any malfunctions.
  3. Prepare Reagents and Materials: Prepare reagents, standards, and quality control materials for test procedures.
  4. Data Entry and Analysis: Use laboratory computers for patient data entry, retrieval, and preparing laboratory worksheets and reports. Enter daily workload statistics into the laboratory information system.
  5. Software and Reporting: Utilize general and instrument-specific software systems to analyze, calculate, and tabulate result sets. Prepare, evaluate, and issue corresponding reports.
  6. Quality Control and Assurance: Maintain standardization and quality control of test procedures, monitor test results, and report unusual or questionable test results to pathologists or head technologists.
  7. Patient Care and STAT Tests: Ensure STAT and priority tests are assayed and reported promptly according to established protocols.
  8. Laboratory Supplies and Orientation: Monitor laboratory supplies and stock up to adequate amounts. Orient new technologists, students, and residents in the use of molecular techniques by demonstration and verbal instructions.
  9. Technique Development and Implementation: Participate in the development, evaluation, and implementation of new techniques with senior technical staff and laboratory scientists. Provide input in the development and maintenance of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and make recommendations for changes.
  10. Quality Assurance Programs: Participate in quality assurance programs for the Section through methods such as gathering data on turn-around times (TAT) for test procedures, monitoring performance and quality indicators, and reporting occurrences according to standard operating procedures.
  11. Information Management: Assist with information management, such as workload statistics, through methods such as gathering information, completing analysis, and recording information.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Certification and Education: Certification with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) and graduation from a recognized program in Medical Laboratory Technology, plus two years' recent related experience including biochemical genetics procedures or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Skills and Knowledge: Knowledge and technical competence to perform biochemical genetics procedures, ability to operate related equipment including knowledge of spreadsheet programs and experience with instrument-specific data analysis software, ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, ability to organize workload and set priorities, physical ability to perform the duties of the job, and knowledge of computerized laboratory information systems.
