Overview:
The University of Toronto at St. George Campus Safety Services is a Special Constable service operating under agreement with Toronto Police Services and Peel Regional Police Services. We are committed to delivering community safety and security services that are sensitive to the needs of our community, through collaborative partnerships and teamwork.
Salary: The salary for this position ranges from $29.47 per hour for 4th Class Constable to $39.69 per hour for 1st Class Constable.
Job Description:
We are seeking talented individuals who can meet the challenges of community-based policing in Canada's most diverse university environment and who represent its population. As a Special Constable, you will provide effective law enforcement and security services to the University of Toronto, perform foot, bicycle and mobile patrols, and investigate and report activity that may violate University policies, federal or provincial legislation.
Duties:
- Provide law enforcement and security services to the University of Toronto;
- Perform foot, bicycle and mobile patrols;
- Investigate and report activity that may violate University policies, federal or provincial legislation;
- Take statements from victims, witnesses and suspects;
- Investigate crime-related occurrences on University of Toronto property;
- Gather and preserve evidence; apprehend, arrest and release offenders; execute warrants; transport prisoners;
- Journals all relevant information and prepares reports using NicheRMS software;
- Provide physical security for visiting dignitaries;
- Provide crime prevention and safety programs to the University community;
- Other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A minimum educational requirement: In addition to having a secondary school diploma or equivalent, you have successfully graduated from an accredited university or college.
- For those applicants who do not possess a university degree or a recognized community college diploma, consideration may be given to those who have three (3) years of related experience in policing, as a special constable, loss prevention or security and can demonstrate a satisfactory knowledge of the laws of Canada and the Province of Ontario.
Experience: One (1) year of related work experience is desirable; education may be substituted for experience.
Clearances: Must have no criminal convictions without pardon and be able to qualify for, be appointed to and maintain Special Constable Status through background checks conducted by the Toronto Police Service and receive clearance from the Ontario Provincial Police, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and/or other jurisdictional authorities for access to CPIC and other restricted databases.
Certifications: All applicants must be in possession of a current, valid Standard First Aid and Level 'C' CPR Certificate.
Working Conditions: This position involves working in a fast-paced environment, often dealing with emergency situations. The successful candidate must be able to exercise discretion and confidentiality in their duties.
