Your Opportunity:

The Surgical Care Specialist will be responsible for providing comprehensive patient care on an acute surgical unit in accordance with Alberta Health Services policy and procedures. The Casual Surgery Float Pool is responsible for providing relief staffing to 9 18+ bed units consisting of Plastic/Reconstructive, 2 General Surgery, Urology, ENT/Otolaryngology, Trauma and 3 Orthopedic Surgery. The Surgical Care Specialist will work in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment to provide quality care to patients received from the operating room, emergency department, intensive care unit and directly from home and/or surgery clinics. The role will also involve participating in quality improvement initiatives to support high quality patient care strategies within the surgery program.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations
  • Utilize nursing processes through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making
  • Teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families
  • Play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance

Requirements:

  • Completion of an accredited nursing education program
  • Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA)
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current IV therapy, Pre-op/Post-op care protocols, Central line/PICC care, Ostomy care, basic surgical wound/drain care, complex wound care and negative pressure wounds (VAC dressing), NG tube insertion and management, TPN administration, PCA/PCEA/TAP management, Insulin infusion protocols and blood product administration
  • Strong patient teaching skills
  • Charge Nurse and Connect Care (EPIC) trained
