The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the safety of all students and patrons using the swimming pools, maintaining direct contact with swimmers, and supporting instructional swimming lessons.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the safety of all students and patrons using the swimming pools;
  • Maintain direct contact with swimmers and communicate with them in an effective manner;
  • Support instructional swimming lessons to various age groups following established curriculum;
  • Assist Swim Instructors and Deck Supervisors with implementing lesson plans, evaluations, and managing the safety on deck;
  • Perform first aid as needed throughout the pool and change room areas;
  • Monitor designated pool areas and maintain the cleanliness of the pool deck area, change rooms, and shower areas;
  • Report on required maintenance and perform related work as required;
  • Conduct facility inspections and complete opening and closing checklists;
  • Perform administrative tasks, including taking attendance and logging information into our online database;
  • Assist with other duties as assigned;
  • Serve as a positive, respectful, and effective role model for all AWC swimmers and patrons;
  • Complete mandatory staff training before every session.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 14 years of age;
  • Current Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid & CPR 'C';
  • Knowledge and practice of Lifesaving and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid;
  • Demonstrated ability to handle a variety of service situations in a busy aquatic facility;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Ability to problem solve effectively and work independently with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to work as part of a team with a wide variety of ages and demographic groups;
  • Previous experience as an Assistant Instructor and/or Aquatic Volunteer is an asset;
  • Pool Attendant, National Lifeguard, and Swim Instructor certifications are an asset;
  • Ability to work flexible hours is an asset;
  • Must have or be willing to obtain WHMIS certification;
  • Must pass a background check.

Working Conditions:

  • Required to move, lift, carry, pull, and place objects weighing less than or equal to 40 pounds without assistance;
  • Stand, sit, or walk for an extended period or for an entire shift;
  • Reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, and pulling;
  • Move over sloping, uneven, or slippery surfaces.

Rate: $17.20/hour
