About the Role

Dentons Canada is seeking a seasoned conflicts attorney to join our Canada Conflicts team, based in the Office of the General Counsel in the Canada Region. As a key member of the team, you will play a vital role in assisting with potential conflict of interest issues firm-wide and contributing to the client-matter intake process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop effective search strategies, conduct thorough reviews, and analyze legal conflicts of interest and confidential information issues arising from complex matters, new clients, and lateral hires.
  • Provide commercially sound advice on potential conflicts issues, ensuring alignment with Firm positioning and market sectors.
  • Implement solutions to resolve legal conflicts and confidentiality issues, including drafting consent terms and coordinating information barriers where necessary.
  • Evaluate compliance with relevant rules of professional conduct and Firm conflicts policies.
  • IDentify, analyze, and facilitate resolution of commercial conflicts of interest issues with lawyers and professionals across the Firm.
  • Broker discussions between partners and stakeholders to navigate and resolve legal and commercial conflicts, and confidentiality issues.
  • Serve as a senior point of escalation for colleagues.
  • Offer ad-hoc advice to partners and fee earners as required.
  • Draft and review conflicts-related language for client engagement letters.
  • Advise lawyers and professionals on Firm conflicts rights and obligations under existing client agreements.
  • Become proficient in the firm's client-matter intake platform (Intapp Open).
  • Contribute to the department's 'know-how' system.
  • Assist colleagues with queries and help train junior members as needed.
  • Develop and deliver training/Continuing Professional Development courses to Firm lawyers.
  • Perform other duties assigned to meet the position requirements.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 years of substantive and demonstrable conflicts experience under US rules (transferable to the Canadian context).
  • Prior fee-earning background of at least a few years at an international business law firm or large national law firm (highly desirable but not essential).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Canada or US conflicts rules and guidelines.
  • Understanding of various practice areas to identify potential conflicts issues.
  • Intapp experience preferred.
  • Ability to perform independent searches from scratch (ideally on Intapp or similar platforms).

Estimate Salary: $120,000 - $180,000 per year
