Position Overview

Digital Waters is a pioneering non-profit organization dedicated to monitoring freshwater sources and empowering communities with actionable insights to improve water quality and safeguard the environment. We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Legal Counsel to play a crucial role in ensuring our organization operates within the legal framework, protecting us from potential lawsuits, and managing all legal documentation and compliance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Legal Compliance: Ensure Digital Waters complies with all applicable laws and regulations, including environmental laws, labor laws, and non-profit regulations.
  • Risk Management: Develop and implement strategies to protect the organization from legal risks and liabilities.
  • Contract Management: Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and agreements, including employment contracts, vendor agreements, partnership agreements, and volunteer agreements.
  • Policy Development: Create and update organizational policies, terms, and conditions to ensure legal compliance and protection.
  • Litigation Management: Oversee and manage any litigation or legal disputes involving the organization.
  • Legal Advice: Provide legal advice to the board of directors, executive team, and other stakeholders on various legal matters.
  • Training and Education: Educate staff and volunteers on legal compliance and risk management practices.
  • Incident Management: Develop protocols for responding to legal incidents and managing potential liabilities related to the deployment of monitoring devices or volunteers in public waterways.
Qualifications
  • Education: Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in legal practice, with a focus on non-profit organizations, environmental law, or a related field.
  • Licensure: Licensed to practice law in Ontario, Canada.
  • Skills: Strong understanding of non-profit and environmental law, excellent negotiation and contract management skills, ability to provide clear and concise legal advice, strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, experience with risk management and compliance strategies, and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
