Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated Licensed Practical Nurse to join our team in the Emergency Department at Fort St. John Hospital. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will provide high-quality patient care and work collaboratively with our interdisciplinary team to deliver exceptional patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care in the Emergency Department, including assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating interventions.
  • Work closely with the care team to coordinate health services and participate in discharge and/or care planning.
  • Function as a patient advocate and teach patients and their families about illness/injury and overall health promotion and wellness.
  • Enhance quality of life from the perspective of the patient/family and establish, maintain, and enhance therapeutic relationships based on respect.
  • Provide care to patients across the lifespan and their families, based on stable and/or predictable states of health, and recognize and respond to unexpected patient outcomes.
  • Document care provided and response to incidents in accordance with established policies, procedures, and Emergency Department expectations.
Education and Experience
  • Graduation from a recognized program for Practical Nurses and one (1) year recent experience working in a related area of care.
  • Current practicing registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrate ability in nursing practice related to caring for patients in the Emergency Department, including those across the lifespan with stable and predictable states of health.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of pathophysiology related to common diagnoses related to designated patient groups.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform nursing assessments and interventions related to common diagnoses and specific clinical situations relevant to the designated patient group.
  • Demonstrate ability to make sound clinical judgments to provide safe, ethical patient care and manage a select population of patients.
  • Demonstrate ability to recognize potential complications and care issues relevant to the designated patient group and alert the RN and/or most responsible provider.
  • Demonstrate ability to effectively manage conflict situations and aggressive behavior and use non-violent crisis intervention, behavioral management techniques, and processes specific to the Emergency Department to mitigate violence in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Demonstrate ability to document patient care on appropriate systems/forms in accordance with organizational and unit standards in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Demonstrate ability to provide safe and appropriate telephone consultations and document related discussion and patient care on appropriate systems/forms in accordance with organizational and unit protocol.
  • Demonstrate skills in patient/family-centered care planning, patient/family engagement and education, trauma-informed care, and therapeutic communication.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of legislation, government policies, and procedures as it applies to the rights and obligations of patients and staff as well as the impact of social, cultural, and family systems on health outcomes.
  • Demonstrate skill in performing LPN Scope of Practice and standards of care relevant to the designated patient population in the Emergency Department, including infection control, violence prevention, collaborations, communication, patient flow, etc.
