US Tax Specialist

Job Summary
TransAlta is seeking a highly skilled US Tax Specialist to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the filing of U.S. federal, state, and local tax returns, including cross-border tax compliance filings. This role will also involve preparing and reviewing U.S. tax provisions and analysis under IFRS for financial reporting purposes.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the preparation and review of U.S. tax returns, including cross-border tax compliance filings.
- Prepare and review U.S. tax provisions and analysis under IFRS for financial reporting purposes.
- Develop and implement tax planning strategies to minimize tax liabilities and optimize tax positions.
- Provide U.S. tax advice and support with business transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures.
- Monitor and analyze changes in tax legislation and assess the potential impact on the company.
- Manage and coordinate tax audits and inquiries by federal, state, and local tax authorities.
- Prepare and present responses to tax notices and audit findings.
- Work closely with the Finance, Legal, and Business Development teams to provide tax insights and support on various projects and initiatives.
- Assist in the development and implementation of internal tax policies and procedures.
- Provide training and guidance to junior tax staff and other departments on U.S. tax-related matters.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of U.S. tax laws and regulations, as well as experience in tax planning and compliance. A bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field is required, and a professional certification such as a CPA or J.D. is preferred.
