Job Title: Public Health Physician

At PHSA, we are seeking a highly skilled Public Health Physician to join our team at the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC). As a key member of our Public Health Response team, you will provide medical leadership and expertise in the prevention and control of communicable diseases.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide epidemiologic expertise and consultation to Medical Health Officers, the Provincial Health Officer, and the Minister of Health on the management of communicable disease exposures and outbreaks.
  • Monitor, interpret, and recommend actions based on surveillance data for selected communicable diseases, including nosocomial, vaccine-preventable, respiratory-borne, enteric, zoonotic, bloodborne, and other diseases of public health concern.
  • Assist with high-profile communications aspects for rapid dispersion of information to the public, physicians, public health workers, Medical Health Officers, and government.
  • Prepare reports on communicable disease epidemiology or control for publication.
  • Provide advice and liaison on epidemiological matters with local, provincial, national health care, education, and other organizations.
  • Develop communicable disease control policies for select diseases and assist in the development of budget proposals in support of recommended program or policy changes.
  • Participate in relevant public health research on select diseases or programs and coordinate inter-jurisdictional outbreak investigations and management of select diseases.
Qualifications:
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) from a recognized university.
  • Postgraduate degree in Epidemiology or Public Health.
  • Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) in Community Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Pediatrics with Infectious Disease training, or Medical Microbiology.
  • Registration or eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with word processing, statistical, and analytical software.
  • Proficiency in clinical medicine.
  • Excellent communication skills, including public speaking and public relations.
  • Ability to supervise clinical and administrative staff.
  • Ability to work well in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, mature judgment, and flexibility.
  • A minimum of one year's experience in public health with responsibility for communicable disease control.
