Job Summary

The Crossing Guard Supervisor is a key role within the City of St. Catharines Transportation Services department, responsible for overseeing the entire Crossing Guard Program. This includes recruitment, training, placement, scheduling, and monitoring of staff, as well as conducting field reviews and data analysis to ensure program compliance with provincial guidelines and regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain the work plan for the School Crossing Guard Program, ensuring optimal coverage and safety for school-aged children.
  • Assess staffing needs, design and coordinate recruitment processes, and manage ongoing vacancies.
  • Deploy Crossing Guards, assign shifts, and supervise daily activities, including training, coaching, and performance management.
  • Conduct on-site assessments to ensure compliance with operational procedures and safety protocols, and consult with Transportation Services staff on relevant studies and analysis.
  • Respond to concerns and complaints from parents, schools, and the public, addressing issues related to tardiness, absenteeism, job performance, and site conditions.
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders on Crossing Guard Program issues.
  • Organize and present annual training orientation meetings for new and returning guards.
  • Develop and maintain operating procedures, training requirements, and personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols.
  • Utilize software to track and maintain records, including Crossing Guard contact information, school and crosswalk locations, timekeeping records, equipment, and clothing.
  • Implement health and safety regulations and risk assessments in consultation with HR Specialists and Outside Health and Safety Committee representatives.
  • Administer allocated budget, provide status updates to the Manager, and prepare program cost estimates for the operating budget.
  • Monitor inventory and order equipment and uniform clothing within approved budget.
Requirements
  • College Diploma in Office Administration, Business, Transportation Technology, or related discipline.
  • Current knowledge of applicable legislation, traffic regulations, traffic by-laws, and safety procedures related to school crossings.
  • Enhanced ability to deal courteously and professionally with members of the public, staff members, and third-party entities.
  • Experience in recruitment and selection, training and orientation, and performance management.
  • Strong time management, customer service, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, especially Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Possesses a valid Ontario class "G" driver's license, in good standing, with access to a reliable vehicle for corporate use.
  • Ability to work outside normal business hours.
Work Environment

Expected Work Location: City Hall (eligible for some remote work)

Hours of Work: Currently Monday - Friday; 7:30 am - 3:30 pm
