Job Description:

As a Senior Legal Counsel in our Real Estate and Development Law team, you will provide comprehensive legal services to support the Corporation's real estate strategies. This includes drafting and negotiating complex agreements, providing advice on land development matters, and representing the City at courts and tribunals.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Provide legal counsel on real estate and development law matters, including preparation and review of agreements of purchase and sale, leases, licenses, and other land-related agreements.
  2. Advise Council and Committees, as well as Administration, Vaughan Public Libraries, and other City corporations on complex legal matters.
  3. Participate in corporate-wide projects, negotiate and draft agreements, bylaws, and policies, as applicable.
  4. Represent the City at courts and tribunals, and supervise and/or manage paralegals, law clerks, students, and other legal staff, as assigned.
Requirements:
  1. Minimum of five (5) years of experience in real estate and development law.
  2. Member of the Law Society of Ontario in good standing.
  3. Exceptional organizational, facilitation, and interpersonal skills coupled with the ability to multi-task effectively while contending with conflicting demands and timelines.
  4. Demonstrated political acumen and ability to negotiate, facilitate, mediate, and present information to a varied audience.
  5. Strong analytical, problem-solving, research, and decision-making skills coupled with exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  6. Well-developed ability to interpret, anticipate, and convey highly complex, technical, and abstract information.
  7. Works closely with the Real Estate Department in implementing the City's real estate strategies.
  8. Works closely with the Development Engineering Department on establishing and implementing an effective regime in completing land development-related agreements to support growth in the City.
  9. Provides advice on planning and development matters under the Planning Act, the Development Charges Act, and other applicable legislation as they relate to land development.
  10. Knowledge of MS Office and common software programs to produce accessible documents, presentations, and materials in compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).
  11. Possesses a valid Ontario 'G' Driver's License in good standing, with access to a reliable vehicle for corporate use.
  12. Ability to work outside normal business hours, as required.
Compensation:

$140,000 - $160,000 per year, depending on experience.
