Job Summary:
The Environmental & Lab Technician will perform sampling, extraction, analysis, monitoring, auditing, and reporting duties to support the EHS department in achieving their goals and objectives. This role requires a strong understanding of environmental and laboratory procedures, as well as excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform sampling, extraction, and analysis of environmental samples according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and permitting requirements.
- Maintain workspace, equipment, instrumentation, and incoming/outgoing sample inventory.
- Develop and enhance effective troubleshooting skills and complete regular instrument maintenance and calibration procedures.
- Perform method development and validation.
- Train new team members.
- Operate the Environmental and Air Quality Monitoring Programs for the Swan Hills Treatment Centre (SHTC) on a day-to-day basis.
- Conduct environmental inspections involving field work.
- Prepare reports according to Operating Approvals for submission to regulatory agencies.
- Support the team to achieve their goals and objectives and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
Requirements:
- Knowledge of the Operating Approval and other Acts and Regulations.
- Some mechanical aptitude to troubleshoot problems with samplers.
- Proficiency in data interpretation and report writing.
- Working knowledge of plant processes, including Bailey, ICIS, and Active Factory.
- Understanding of sampling procedures and practices.
- Ability to read and interpret environmental and operating guidelines.
- Working knowledge of Laboratory preparation of environmental samples.
- Effective customer service attitude and commitment to providing exceptional customer service and quality results.
- Effective interpersonal and conflict management skills to facilitate working effectively with a wide range and number of people.
- Effective negotiation, persuasion, and listening skills to facilitate successful resolution of employee and management concerns and requests.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills to facilitate and promote open discussions and understanding.
- Effective time management, decision-making, and planning and organizing skills.
- Attentiveness to details and ability to manage a diverse workload within a fast-paced environment.

- Understanding of all preparatory and analytical techniques used in applicable section.
- Knowledge of the QA/QC requirements for analysis/reporting of pertinent tests.
- Knowledge of written procedure content and format requirements.
- Ability to take instructions for the performance of non-routine analysis.
- Ability to perform all analyses in accordance with pertinently applicable policies as per the Laboratory Quality Manual.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1 year's related environmental experience and 1 to 2 years' related experience in operating and maintaining laboratory analytical instruments.
- 2 to 3 years' related experience.
- Previous experience within an industrial plant environment is a definite asset.
- Previous experience within a regulatory environment is a definite asset.
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Diploma in Environmental, Biological or Chemical Technology or a combination of demonstrated similar work experience, aptitude, and specific skills training is a definite asset.
Work Schedule:
The Environment and Laboratory Technician is able to participate in a Compressed Work Week Schedule, working five (5) days per week, approximately eight and a half (hours per day, Monday to Friday, with an earned day off every second two-week pay period.
