Job Summary

Vancouver Community College is seeking a qualified Music Instructor to teach students in an assigned field of study using a diverse set of instruction methods and tools. The successful candidate will develop curriculum, prepare teaching materials, and provide assessments of students' progress.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teach students using a diverse and systematic plan of lectures, presentations, demonstrations, discussion groups, laboratory work, shop sessions, seminars, case studies, field assignments, and independent or group projects.
  • Develop curriculum and prepare teaching materials and outlines for courses, including audio visual and web-related materials where appropriate.
  • Prepare, administer, and mark papers, tests, exams, and other assessments to monitor and evaluate students' progress. Provide detailed feedback on student performance.
  • Assist and provide support to students and potential students by advising on program curricula and career decisions.
  • Provide individualized or group tutorial or remedial instruction to students who require it.
  • Maintain effective stewardship of classroom facilities, equipment, materials, software, and tools.
  • Arrange for and supervise independent or group projects, field placements, laboratory work, or hands-on training.
  • Adhere to VCC policies and procedures, including being available to students and maintaining confidentiality of student information.
  • Participate in departmental and college meetings and events. Consult with other College departments and may serve on committees concerning matters such as budgets, curriculum revision, and course and certificate or diploma requirements.
Requirements
  • Bachelor of Music (or equivalent) degree.
  • Recognized peer-assessed abilities in specific areas, demonstrated by certificates or other credentials from conservatories and other similar institutions, may be considered as equivalent to a Bachelor of Music degree.
  • Teaching experience in a diploma program elsewhere.
  • (Desirable) Artistic excellence.
  • (Desirable) Demonstrable body of work or original course materials a strong asset.
  • (Desirable) Must be able to teach in two (preferably more) skills music subjects such as: Kodaly Solfege; Keyboard techniques; Digital and analog tools; Rhythm studies; Improvisation; Conducting; Lyric diction; Introductory music business management.
  • (Desirable) Performance studies.
