Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada University of British Columbia Full time
Job Summary

The Senior Research Manager plays a pivotal role in the achievement of Dr. Suzanne Simard's research program. By leveraging a collaborative approach, the incumbent will lead the development of research programs, projects, and budgets. The Senior Research Manager is responsible for identifying research synergy opportunities for future projects and programs, providing expert professional consulting to external facilities, ensuring that programs integrate traditional Indigenous ecological knowledge values, and leading strategic financial planning and implementation for research projects and programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Research Duties:
    • Establishes and drives strategic priorities for sustainable forest management in a changing climate research program, with a focus on the Mother Tree Project. This involves aligning initiatives with long-term research goals and adapting strategies to emerging environmental challenges.
    • In collaboration with the PI, determines the strategic direction of the program and develops the projects in alignment with the broader unit direction. Leads the implementation of programs and projects, including planning, execution, and evaluation of projects.
    • Oversees the full HR lifecycle, including recruitment, onboarding, training, performance management, and offboarding. In addition, leads a team of staff members (6 people) and year-round field crews (typically 8 – 12 staff and summer assistants).
    • Directs the development and implementation of joint research programs with provincial and national impact. Examples include:
      • The broad-scale and long-term forest experiments along interior (Mother Tree Project) and coastal climate gradients (Mother Tree Network).
      • Special Regenerative Forestry initiatives in First Nations territories.
    • Leads strategic collaborations with internal and external stakeholders to pioneer innovative research methodologies. Collaborations include stakeholders in government, industry, community forests, research forests, and First Nations.
    • Consults with external research facilities to provide professional advice and aid in complex analysis of research data, leading to joint authorship of scientific papers.
    • Identifies opportunities for research funding and crafts research grant applications.
    • Leads budget preparation and forecasting requirements for research accounts and grant funding. Provides advice to PI on cost eligibility for specific projects, strategic direction, goals, objectives, methodologies, staffing requirements, capital requirements, and stakeholder engagement for the projects.
    • Throughout the year, produces literature reviews, technical reports, and journal articles about research results.
  • Consequence of Error/Judgement:

The consequences of data mismanagement would result in delays in producing scientific papers and reports expected by funding bodies and stakeholders. Errors in the performance duties could significantly impact the effectiveness, image, reputation, and financial status of the Mother Tree Project.

Supervision Received:

The Senior Research Manager will work independently and report directly to Dr. Suzanne Simard. All work produced by the manager will be evaluated based on the achievement of program objectives.

Supervision Given:

The Senior Research Manager is responsible for the co-supervision of 2-3 Research staff by providing direction for new and ongoing duties and when facing complex situations. In addition, the incumbent will work closely with graduate and undergraduate students on research projects at Mother Tree sites.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree in forest sciences, with courses in soils, ecology, and silviculture.
  • Significant experience in forestry and forest research, including strategic direction, design of complex research experiments, and working with Indigenous partners.
  • Candidates with RPF designation preferred.
  • High level of organizational skills.
  • Experienced in organizing and analyzing complex datasets.
  • Experience in writing successful grant applications.
  • Extensive knowledge of forest ecology, plants, soils, silviculture systems, carbon budgets, and associated scientific data collection.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safe laboratory and field practices.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with members of staff, faculty, and senior management.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects/tasks as well as multiple deadlines, prioritize effectively and adapt quickly to change.
