At YMCA Calgary, we are seeking experienced individuals to lead our horse riding programs.

Job Overview

This is a physically demanding role that requires working outdoors in various weather conditions. As a Horse Riding Program Leader, you will be responsible for leading horsemanship classes, horseback riding lessons, and guided trail rides for participants with varying levels of experience and skill.

You will also contribute to barn operations and herd maintenance, including catching, grooming, and saddling horses, identifying health concerns, behavior management, basic veterinary care, cleaning, and barn chores.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead horse riding programs, including horsemanship classes, horseback riding lessons, arena rides, and guided trail rides for participants with varied experience and skill
  • Contribute to barn operations and herd maintenance, including catching, grooming, and saddling horses, identifying health concerns, behavior management, basic veterinary care, cleaning, and barn chores
  • Work as part of a collaborative team to support campers, participants, and fellow staff
  • Support the Ranch and all program areas at CCH
  • Be responsible for the risk management and comfort of participants
  • Support the program and Ranch operation's Health and Safety obligations as defined by law and YMCA policies
  • Support group development and create a positive learning environment for all participants and staff
  • Support the planning and facilitation of intentional, developmentally appropriate play-based learning activities
  • Contribute to YMCA outdoors programming and facilitate horse programs that support camp experience impact goals
  • Support the development of a team through training, supervising, and providing feedback, both positive and constructive to each staff member
  • Establish and maintain effective communication standards with stakeholders and professionally represent YMCA Calgary both internally and with the broader community
  • Provide leadership that ensures program quality and the delivery of excellent service
Requirements
  • Experience working with children to facilitate belonging within outdoors-based programs
  • Horse and riding experience (any discipline)
  • Previous coaching and/or guiding experience is an asset
  • Previous supervisory experience is an asset
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Good emotional fitness (zero tolerance for directing negative feelings at participants, staff, animals, or equipment)
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR C certification (CPR recertified within the last 12 months) at minimum; Wilderness First Aid is an asset
  • Evidence of a clear Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Search
  • Three professional references

In addition, you will enjoy a competitive salary, ranging from $50,000 to $60,000 per year, depending on experience.
