About the Role:

The YMCA Calgary is seeking a skilled and experienced individual to join our team as a Wrangler. As a key member of our Ranch team, you will be responsible for leading horse programming, including horsemanship classes, horseback riding lessons, and guided trail rides for participants with varied and often limited experience and skill.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead YMCA horse programming, including horsemanship classes, horseback riding lessons, arena rides, and guided trail rides for participants with varied and often limited experience and skill.
  • Contribute to barn operations and herd maintenance, including catching, grooming, and saddling horses, identifying horse health concerns, behavior management, and guidance, basic veterinary care, cleaning, and barn chores.
  • Work as part of a collaborative team to support all campers, participants, and fellow staff.
  • Support the Ranch and all program areas at CCH.
  • Be responsible for the risk management and comfort of participants.
  • Support the program and Ranch operation's Health and Safety obligations as defined by law and YMCA policies.
  • Support group development and create a positive learning environment for all participants and staff.
  • Support the planning and facilitation of intentional, developmentally appropriate play-based learning activities.
  • Contribute to YMCA outdoors programming and facilitate horse programs that support camp experience impact goals.
  • Support the development of a team through training, supervising, and providing feedback, both positive and constructive, to each staff member.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication standards with stakeholders and professionally represent YMCA Calgary both internally and with the broader community.
  • Provide leadership that ensures program quality and the delivery of excellent service.
  • Effectively communicate and act as a liaison between departments and with vendors, clients, and community members.

Requirements:

  • Experience working with children to facilitate belonging within outdoors-based programs.
  • Horse and riding experience (any discipline).
  • Previous coaching and/or guiding experience is an asset.
  • Previous supervisory experience is an asset.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good emotional fitness (zero tolerance for directing negative feelings at participants, staff, animals, or equipment).
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR C certification (CPR recertified within the last 12 months) at minimum; Wilderness First Aid is an asset.
  • Evidence of a clear Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Search.
  • Three professional references.

Working Conditions:

Wranglers will work in the outdoors for the majority of each day and are required to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Accommodations are in tipis or cabins, and may be nearby to campers to provide supervision. Wranglers will need to lift program supplies, including hay, feed, and horse gear, as well as walk, bend, stand, and ride for extended periods of time.
