Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced legal professional to join our team as a Senior Family Law Counselor. About the Role

This position will involve providing high-quality family law duty counsel services in Brampton Courthouse, including intake and assessment of family law clients, provision of procedural and summary legal advice, representation in court proceedings, and referrals to mediation services. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of family law legislation, particularly child protection law, and experience in both family and child protection matters.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide family law duty counsel services, including providing instructions to Legal Aid Workers (and students), preparation of court documents for eligible clients, making appropriate referrals when required.
  • Represent clients in the Ontario Court of Justice at first appearances, conferences, motions, negotiations, Family Responsibility Office (FRO) matters, Children's Aid Societies matters, and other court hearings as required.
  • Assist unrepresented clients with Child Youth and Family Services Act (CYFSA) matters, including document preparation and in-court appearances.
  • Provide advice lawyer services at the Family Law Information Center (FLIC) and other advice clinics as needed.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure high-quality legal work is delivered in a cost-effective manner.
  • Record data and produce reports as required within established reporting times.
Requirements
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of relevant family law legislation and in particular child protection law and in-court experience in both family and child protection matters.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide sensitive and compassionate client service to those who may be victims of domestic violence.
  • Demonstrated ability to use latest communication technologies, including tablets and smartphones, and video conferencing platforms to deliver services virtually.
  • Ability to draft legal documents without need for review.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Sound knowledge of Legal Aid Ontario's operations and mandate.
  • Prior family and CYFSA law experience.
  • Demonstrated interest in Aboriginal legal issues.
  • Training or advocacy experience in relation to mental health issues.

The estimated salary for this position is $80,000 - $110,000 per annum, depending on experience.
