Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Senior Mental Health Nurse to join our team at Island Health. This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires strong assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation skills in mental health treatment programs.

About the Role

This position involves assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating mental health treatment programs for adults with a variety of mental disorders. The successful candidate will have a minimum of one year's recent psychiatric nursing experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant or a practicing RPN registrant is required. Current CPR certification is also necessary. A valid BC Driver's License is required, and if necessary, a Class 4 Driver's License must be obtainable.

The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) Recovery model, assessment and treatment methodologies, learning theories of mental disorders, and intervention strategies. Familiarity with relevant mental health legislation and statutory boundaries governing consumer rights is essential.

We require the ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment, manage aggressive behavior, and use non-violent crisis intervention and behavioral management techniques where appropriate. Strong interpersonal, crisis intervention, leadership, teaching, and communication skills are necessary for success in this role.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate mental health treatment programs for adults with various mental disorders.
  • Administer and monitor the side effects of psychotropic medications.
  • Work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team to provide comprehensive patient care.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
  • Stay up-to-date with best practices in mental health nursing and incorporate evidence-based knowledge into daily practice.
