Job Title: Staff Lawyer - Indigenous Justice

Collage HR is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Staff Lawyer to join our team at the Indigenous Justice Centre. As a Staff Lawyer, you will play a critical role in representing Indigenous clients facing criminal charges and advocating for their rights within the child protection system.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide legal representation for criminal and child protection matters to Indigenous clients who would otherwise not have access to legal representation.
  • Advocate on behalf of clients for diversion from the formal court system to less intrusive measures, including Indigenous intervention protocols and alternative dispute resolution processes.
  • Work closely with the Resource and Support Worker to provide wrap-around services that meet the needs of clients.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with Indigenous communities, service providers, and government agencies to ensure clients have access to culturally safe and Indigenized programs and services.
  • Collaborate with clients, their families, and communities to develop and propose alternate care plans that prioritize the well-being and safety of children.
  • Advocate for Gladue Reports in all cases where the court must determine the client's sentence.
  • Maintain comprehensive and up-to-date client files and compile statistical data as required.
Requirements:
  • Membership in a Canadian Law Society, preferably British Columbia.
  • J.D. or equivalent degree.
  • 1-5 years of litigation experience in criminal defence, with exposure to MCFD (child welfare) matters an asset.
  • Knowledge of local and urban Indigenous cultures and the ability to provide a culturally safe environment for clients.
  • Strong organizational, case, and file management skills, as well as stress management and time management skills.
  • Ability to engage people to build trust and rapport, with effective verbal and listening communication skills.
  • Valid Driver's License and ability to travel.

  • Competitive salary range of $90,000 - $150,000, commensurate with education and experience.
  • Full-time position with a minimum hybrid work arrangement available.
