Indigenous Justice Lawyer Opportunity

Collage HR is seeking a highly skilled and culturally competent Indigenous Justice Lawyer to join our team. As a Staff Lawyer, you will play a critical role in reducing the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the criminal justice system and supporting Nations as they move towards sovereignty over justice.

About the Role:

The Staff Lawyer will provide legal representation for criminal and child protection matters to clients who would not otherwise have legal representation. You will work closely with Indigenous clients to help them access the legal supports and other social supports necessary to address the challenges facing them in the child protection and criminal justice systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal representation for criminal and child protection matters
  • Advocate on behalf of clients for diversion from the formal court system to less intrusive measures
  • Work with the Resource and Support Worker to provide wrap-around services to clients
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with Indigenous communities and service providers
  • Collaborate with Indigenous, local, provincial, and federal government agencies and service providers to ensure clients have access to culturally safe and Indigenized programs and services
  • Maintain comprehensive and up-to-date client files
  • Compile and submit statistical data as required

Requirements:

  • Membership in a Canadian Law Society, preferably British Columbia
  • J.D. / LL.B.; Advanced Degrees and/or Joint J.D./J.I.D. are considered an asset
  • 1-5 years litigation experience in criminal defence, with exposure to MCFD (child welfare) matters an asset
  • Knowledge of local and urban Indigenous cultures
  • Ability to provide a culturally safe environment for clients
  • Knowledge of the structure and procedures of Canada's Criminal Justice System and British Columbia's child protection system
  • Knowledge of local agencies offering Indigenous/restorative justice services and support services to offenders, children, youth, and families
  • Self-motivated individual with strong organizational, case, and file management skills
  • Ability to engage people to build trust and rapport, with effective verbal and listening communication skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, problem-solve, and take initiative
  • Valid Driver's License and ability to travel

What We Offer:

  • Extended benefits package, including health and dental, personal days, paid vacation, and RRSP/TFSA savings plans
  • Competitive salary range: $90,000 - $150,000, commensurate with education and experience
  • Full-time position, 35 hours/week, Mondays to Fridays, 8:30am - 4:30pm
