Ultrasound Technologist Job Summary
The Ultrasound Technologist performs abdominal, obstetrical, pelvic, peripheral vascular, and small parts ultrasound examinations, adhering to patient safety practices. Key responsibilities include receiving and completing requisitions, entering relevant data into the diagnostic imaging information system, preparing patients for specific procedures, and conducting examinations using ultrasound and Doppler techniques.
Key Responsibilities
- Receives and prepares patients for testing by reviewing patients' case history, correlating clinical history with examination to be performed, assessing the nature of the issue to determine a process for testing, and explaining procedures to patients.
- Performs ultrasound procedures on various sections of the body, positioning patients, placing probes on designated areas, and utilizing ultrasound and Doppler techniques to obtain images.
- Assists in procedural rooms by setting up biopsy trays, assisting radiologists during interventional procedures, and providing support and comfort to patients during procedures.
- Checks resultant images for technical quality and completeness, prepares technical worksheets, and discusses images with radiologists to ensure examinations meet designated requirements.
- Facilitates workflow by checking information on requisitions meets departmental standards, regulating inpatient examination time, and arranging for patient transportation according to departmental procedure.
Requirements
- Graduate of a recognized training program in Medical Diagnostic Sonography.
- Certified with Sonography Canada or the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or certified with Sonography Canada and have passed the Sonography Canada Skills Assessment (CCSA).
- Demonstrated knowledge of theory and practice for Sonography procedures, including abdominal, obstetrical, pelvic, peripheral vascular, and small parts.
- Demonstrated knowledge of aseptic techniques.
- Demonstrated knowledge and practice of safe work procedures with diagnostic sonographic and medical imaging equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to perform sonographic examinations in compliance with departmental standards.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, coworkers, physicians, and other healthcare staff.
- Commitment to developing knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments, including Truth & Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan, and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study.
- Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
- Knowledge of social, economic, political, and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism, and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments.
