Job Summary

We are seeking a Senior Group Underwriter to join our team. As a key member of our Group Benefits team, you will be responsible for assessing risk by analyzing industry, financial stability, and claims experience to align with our business strategy.

You will work closely with the team to maintain a profitable book of business and provide superior client service. Your expertise in group underwriting principles, including manual and experience rating methodology, will be invaluable in helping us achieve our goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Examine, prepare, and calculate competitive pricing, new business quotes, and renewal rates for all types of financial arrangements within the assigned portfolio.
  • Analyze data to determine renewal rates, considering premiums, claims, experience rating methodology, demographic changes, claims trends, legislative changes, guidelines, pricing strategies, policy provisions, and expenses.
  • Review, verify, and evaluate quotations to ensure alignment with underwriting guidelines and business risk tolerance levels, providing recommendations to reduce risk while meeting client needs.
  • Strategize and negotiate with stakeholders regarding plan design, deviations, expenses, price, rate guarantees, and rate increase capping to secure new business and renew existing contracts.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry-related information, including mental health and wellness initiatives, economic changes, provincial drug plans, and updates to legislation.
  • Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to sales partners and the team on quotes, renewals, and related procedures.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Four years of experience in Group Benefits Insurance or a related field.
  • A post-secondary education in Business Administration, Commerce, Finance, Statistics, Math, or Actuarial Science.
  • The Group Benefits Associate (GBA) designation, Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) designation, Health Insurance Association of America (HIAA) certification, or Associate, Customer Service (ACS) certification.
  • Expert knowledge of Group Underwriting principles, including manual and experience rating methodology.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of Group Insurance Financial Arrangements, including Refund and Retention, Pooled, and Administrative Services Only (ASO) concepts.
