About the Opportunity:

The Director of Tax or Assistant VP Tax will play a crucial role in managing all aspects of tax compliance and governance. This position involves overseeing quarterly and annual corporate income and commodity tax provisions, as well as managing annual returns and supporting schedules for the company and related entities.

Tax Compliance and Governance Responsibilities:

  1. Manage all quarterly and annual corporate income and commodity tax provisions, ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
  2. Oversee the preparation and submission of annual returns and supporting schedules for the company and other related entities.
  3. Manage tax investment schedules and gather and verify supporting documentation from various departments.
  4. Review and manage tax reporting requirements to Head Office group tax, ensuring compliance with federal and provincial laws and regulations.
  5. Responsible for corporate tax installment remittances process and participating in Tax Compliance and Governance projects as required.

Domestic Tax Audits:

  1. Respond to annual external audit and government domestic tax audit queries, ensuring prompt and accurate responses.
  2. Project manage audit query responses, coordinating with various departments to present a cohesive representation of information.
  3. Develop strong relationships with Tax authorities, ensuring effective communication and resolution of audit queries.

Strategic Initiatives:

  1. Monitor and analyze various strategic tax activities, including Branch Tax Election and SFFO.
  2. Assist in tax-related special projects, research, and analysis, focusing on Payroll, Pension, Group Tax, Solvency II, Investment Duration analysis, and M&A due diligence.
  3. Contribute to process improvements and automation to the tax compliance process, driving efficiency and effectiveness.
  4. Perform research and analysis independently to support tax positions, leveraging expertise and industry knowledge.
  5. Provide technical support to ensure compliance with federal and provincial laws and regulations, serving as a subject matter expert.

Risks, Controls, and Operational Excellence:

  1. Assist in the management or manage tax legal matters to resolution, addressing Items in Appeals/Courts.
  2. Establish process alignment and improvements, focusing on Technical Accounting, Reporting, and Data Analytics.
  3. Create and maintain documentation that supports the company's tax position, ensuring accuracy and transparency.
  4. Completion of CICA In-depth tax course is required, demonstrating expertise and commitment to professional development.
  5. 8-10 years post-designation tax experience is required, along with advanced skills in Excel and strong proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and Taxprep software.

Estimated Salary Range: $120,000 - $160,000 per year, based on industry standards and location. This salary range reflects the complexity and scope of the role, as well as the required qualifications and experience.
