Job Summary

Under the direction of a Communications Supervisor, you will be responsible for receiving emergency calls from the public and other agencies; quickly analyzing information received from the caller and dispatching the required emergency vehicles. You will efficiently operate console equipment, including telephone, radio, and computer-aided dispatch; following established procedures in making calm, sound decisions as required in an emergency services environment. The dispatcher has a good working knowledge of available resources to support emergency scene operations.

Responsibilities

- Receive emergency calls from the public and other agencies
- Quickly analyze information received from the caller and dispatch the required emergency vehicles
- Efficiently operate console equipment, including telephone, radio, and computer-aided dispatch
- Follow established procedures in making calm, sound decisions as required in an emergency services environment

Requirements

- Ontario Secondary School Diploma (grade 12) or recognized equivalency
- A minimum of four years in a customer service field, face-to-face or telephone
- Previous Fire Service experience, and, in particular, previous experience within an Emergency Communications Centre will be considered an asset
- Valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
- Current Red Cross Standard First Aid/CPR level C or AED certificates

Salary and Benefits

The estimated salary for this position is $43,000 - $58,000 per year. The City of Ottawa offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision coverage, as well as a pension plan and paid time off.

Work Environment

This is a part-time permanent position with rotating shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and statutory holidays. You must be available to work shift work, including evenings, nights, and weekends.

Language Requirement

The successful candidate must meet the language requirement for the position upon hire. This includes proficiency in English and French, both orally and in writing.
