Key Responsibilities

Serve as a technical expert by offering guidance to personnel within the designated discipline, utilizing established standards and methodologies. Support the Technical Practice Lead or Team Lead in formulating standardized policies, protocols, and procedures aligned with practice objectives. Aid in executing and communicating planned technical modifications to staff while providing necessary feedback to the Technical Practice Lead or Team Lead. Collaborate with the Team Lead or Technical Practice Lead to address challenges and eliminate obstacles. Deliver technical support and advice through various methods, including demonstrating procedures and work techniques to staff, assisting in resolving technical challenges, and overseeing technical activities to ensure compliance with area standards and safety protocols. Report unresolved issues to the Team Lead or Technical Practice Lead for appropriate escalation. Act as a resource for troubleshooting instrumentation and methodology issues. Contribute to the development, implementation, and assessment of the discipline-specific Quality Program and associated activities, while monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs). Supervise internal and external quality control and other quality metrics, making necessary adjustments and preparing quality reports. Communicate technical quality concerns to the Technical Practice Lead or Team Lead, participate in investigating critical incidents as needed, and keep the Site Supervisor or Team Lead informed of all quality and safety matters. Implement DAP standards and recommendations, ensuring staff adherence. Assist in investigating complaints from healthcare providers and patients, and support the Site Supervisor and Team Lead in maintaining safety standards. Engage in the development, coordination, and execution of orientation and training programs for staff and students. Collaborate with the Technical Practice Lead or Team Lead and Site Supervisor to coordinate training activities and performance within the designated area, identify training needs, create training tools, and conduct necessary audits to ensure competency. Demonstrate procedures and work techniques as required, providing input on technical performance issues to the Site Supervisor. Participate in evaluating, selecting, and implementing new instrumentation and methodologies as necessary. Inform the Technical Practice Lead or Team Lead of equipment requirements for the area and provide relevant data such as test volumes and maintenance documentation. Assist in establishing timelines and assigning staff for the evaluation and implementation of new equipment. Support the assessment of new methods and equipment, the introduction of new procedures, and schedule training for designated staff on new equipment, techniques, and procedures as appropriate. Ensure maintenance and calibration of designated laboratory instruments, notifying the Technical Practice Lead or Team Lead and Site Supervisor of significant instrument failures as needed. Assist the Technical Practice Lead or Team Lead in developing and maintaining procedure manuals for the assigned area.

Qualifications

Certification from the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science or a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology (or a related biological science) or an Advanced Registered certificate, along with a minimum of three (3) years of recent, relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. A valid driver's license and access to a personal vehicle for business-related purposes are required.

Skills & Knowledge

Extensive knowledge and recent experience in the laboratory discipline. In-depth understanding of the standards of practice and guidelines for Medical Laboratory Technologists established by the CSMLS and/or other relevant national professional associations. Strong knowledge of method development, evaluation, and research processes. Familiarity with organizational policies, procedures, and standards of care, including safe work practices with discipline-specific equipment. Understanding of the administrative structure and function of laboratories of varying sizes. Proven ability to work effectively as a team member, leader, educator, motivator, and facilitator, while providing support to others. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with colleagues, medical personnel, and other healthcare staff, in both individual and group settings. Commitment to fostering lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada, in accordance with TRC and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act. As a valuable asset, we seek candidates with knowledge of the social, economic, political, and historical contexts of settler colonialism affecting Indigenous Peoples, as well as familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism and cultural safety.
