Job Summary

The Freight Car Mechanic is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of railway freight cars by performing routine maintenance, repairs, and inspections in accordance with Federal and CN's regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Inspect and maintain railway freight cars to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs on rail cars, including underframes, structures, safety appliances, and draft systems
  • Repair and install railway car parts, such as compressors, air valves, bearings, couplings, air cylinders, and piping
  • Operate various equipment, including cranes, trucks, track mobiles, and shop equipment
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records of maintenance and repairs
Working Conditions
  • Work in a fast-paced environment with varying weather conditions and environmental factors
  • Perform physical tasks, including lifting, bending, and climbing, up to 50 pounds (22 kg) and occasionally up to 85 pounds (39 kg)
  • Work independently and as part of a team to achieve goals and objectives
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED)
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to work autonomously and adapt to different situations
  • Good teamwork and communication skills
  • Basic computer skills
Training

The Freight Car Mechanic receives on-the-job training, both theoretical and practical, over a period of 3 weeks at 40 hours per week. Depending on the individual's level of experience, a 4-year on-the-job CN specific apprenticeship program may be required.
