City Experiences is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Port Captain to join our team in Toronto. As a key member of our marine operations team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our passenger vessels.
About the Role:The Port Captain will be responsible for:
- Ensuring the safety and security of passengers, crew, and vessels
- Assigning deck crew tasks and providing direction
- Standing bridge watch and ensuring safe navigation and maneuvering of vessels
- Ensuring all navigation charts are up to date and bridge equipment is in working condition
- Ensuring all lifesaving and firefighting equipment are in readiness condition
- Providing an exceptional guest experience as prescribed in our RESPECT Service System
- Responsible for pre-cruise preparation, supervision of crew, proper piloting of vessel, and vessel reporting system
- Conducting pre-cruise meetings and communicating to crew all necessary information regarding the cruise
- Carrying out regular safety inspections of the boat and ensuring the ship is in seaworthiness
- Gathering pertinent cruise event details from other departments to ensure special guest requests are fulfilled
- Ensuring staff and guests adhere to all safety standards and procedures
- Ensuring crew wears proper PPE, especially when carrying out critical activities
- Organizing and participating in the execution of the Safety Program, including emergency drills and reporting any shortcomings to the Marine Director
- Participating in the proper maintenance of all ship's systems and boarding facilities
- Carrying out various checks as required by the Planned Maintenance System
- Standing watch to look for obstructions in a ship's path or locating navigational aids such as buoys and lighthouses
- Ensuring adherence to Transport Canada rules and regulations and other federal and local rules and regulations
- Ensuring strict compliance to Emergency Response and Evacuation Plan
- Executing other projects as assigned by management
- Delivering training and vessel familiarization to new crew
- Adhering to Company's performance management guidelines for all discipline and termination situations
- Developing positive working relationships with department heads and peers
- Developing strong teamwork within the staff
- Resolving guest problems in conjunction with the on-duty Restaurant Manager utilizing strong guest service skills and exercising effective communication skills
- Completing all shift records: checklist, logbook (Deck & Engine), Radio log, and safety training documentation
- Ensuring accident/incident/Near miss forms are duly filled, reported, and sent to the Director of Marine
- Ensuring monthly safety inspection of the vessel is carried out at regular intervals
- Maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the vessel and assisting in the sanitization of the boat as required
- Loading or unloading materials from vessels
- Ensuring safe means of embarkation and disembarkation of passengers and crew
- Handling lines to moor vessels to the pier when necessary
- Assisting Engineer in operating and maintaining ship equipment such as engines and generators
- Escalating any mechanical or maintenance issues to the Director of Marine
- Being prepared to begin work at the scheduled time
- Maintaining uniform and personal grooming in compliance with appearance standards
- Managing and approving crew time off, sick time, and all other requests
- Creating and managing crew schedules
- Accountable for providing Captains with the tools, documentation, and schedules to deliver training, drills, and safety talks to meet regulatory, legislative, and required safety obligations
- Ensuring Captains are conducting and recording training drills and safety talks
- Together with HR, ensuring all training and required certifications for the Marine Operations department are up to date
- Reviewing and recommending updates to the departmental policies, procedures, and plans, including the Safety Management System (SMS) and the Vessel Security Plan (VSP)
- Recommending, planning, and executing projects as directed by the Director, Marine Operations
- Assisting in the preparation and achievement of the marine operating/capital budget and strategic plan
- Working with Associate Director Marine Operations and other department Managers to share information, ideas, and strategies for continuous improvement
- Developing new and innovative ways to enhance safety, operational efficiency, and guest experience
- Ensuring ongoing cost analysis and containment in responsible areas
- Participating in marine vessel maintenance in shoulder season, assisting engineering team with projects and off-season repairs
- Assisting with the recruitment, placement, and onboarding of new crew, including Captains, Mates, and Deckhands
- Additional job duties as assigned
- Master 150 Gross Tonnage certificate
- Consideration will be given to candidates with a Master Limited over 60 Gross Tonnage certificate who possess sufficient supporting experience
- Current Marine Basic First Aid
- Current (within previous two (2) years) Transport Canada approved marine medical certification
- Minimum two (2) years of experience in the marine environment
- Restricted Operator Certificate ROC-MC
- Simulated Electronic Navigation (Limited)
- Candidates, who, in addition to the above, have relevant skills such as ship-handling, customer service, foreign language knowledge, will be given strong consideration
- A positive attitude and good work ethic
- Ability to reach, bend, stoop, wipe, push, pull, move or lift up to 45 pounds (20 kilograms)
- Walk, stand, sit, and work in all types of weather conditions for extended periods
- Continually and repeatedly perform functions indoors and outdoors
- If required, wear assigned Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (non-slip shoes, gloves, weather-appropriate dress attire, sun protection)
- Will be required to be available for work on all major holidays
