Job Summary:

We are seeking an Urban Design Planner to join our team at the City of St. Catharines. As a key member of our planning department, you will play a vital role in shaping the city's urban design program and providing expert advice on various planning projects.

About the Role:

This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity for a skilled urban designer to work with our team to champion and implement the City's urban design program. Your expertise will be instrumental in providing professional advice and guidance to Planning Staff, other departments, members of the public, and applicants.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Develop and update the City's urban design policies, procedures, standards, and guideline documents
  • Review and comment on all planning development and grant applications, including plans, drawings, reports, cost estimates, and agreements
  • Provide expert advice on the preparation of official plans, secondary plans, master plans, and other land-use studies related to urban design
  • Research assigned special projects and prepare plans, policy proposals, and recommendations based on standard planning criteria
  • Contribute to municipal projects for public realm improvements, active transportation improvements, and City facilities
  • Prepare requests for proposals, quotations, and tenders, and manage projects
  • Present expert evidence on planning and urban design matters before inquiries and the Ontario Land Tribunal
  • Prepare and/or contribute to the preparation of studies, reports, policies, and by-laws
  • Liaise with the community and Council, attend public meetings, and make presentations as required

Requirements:

  • A degree from a recognized University in Urban Design, Architecture, or Planning with an Urban Design specialization
  • Minimum of four (4) years experience in Urban Design
  • Membership in OPPI and CIP or Professional Architectural Association preferred
  • Superior communication skills, including verbal, written, and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated skills in effectively chairing a meeting
  • Current knowledge of the Planning Act, Provincial Land Use policy, and other related legislation
  • Working knowledge of the property data management system, AMANDA, or similar system, and Microsoft Office
  • Proven completion of Ministry of Labour Worker Health and Safety Awareness training

What We Offer:

The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary range of $79,294 - $89,072 annually, paid bi-weekly.

Eligible candidates may also be entitled to part-time remote work arrangements.

Currently, this position requires Monday-Friday 8:30am - 4:30pm hours of work.
