About the Role

This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity to join the team at 570 The Dominion of Canada General as a Senior Legal Assistant - Insurance Defense. As a key member of our legal team, you will play a critical role in supporting our lawyers in the preparation and presentation of cases in the insurance defense environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and maintain accurate and timely legal documentation, including pleadings, discovery, mediations, and motions.
  • Draft and review correspondence, and determine the urgency of incoming mail to ensure prompt attention.
  • Provide exceptional telephone assistance, including answering routine questions and directing calls to the appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain and update lawyers' calendars, diaries, and tickler dates to ensure seamless case management.
  • Review calendars daily to identify upcoming events and deadlines, and proactively handle tasks to ensure timely completion.
  • Input and maintain accurate information into our proprietary case management system, ensuring data integrity and compliance.
  • Organize and index all case files for staff lawyers, and maintain accurate and up-to-date records.
  • Schedule and coordinate examinations for discovery, medical examinations, and other court-designated hearings.
  • Retain court reporters and interpreters as needed, and coordinate logistics for court appearances.
  • Act as a liaison between insured, claim professionals, and staff counsel, providing and requesting information as needed to facilitate case progress.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Requirements
  • Associate's degree or vocational training in a related field is preferred.
  • A minimum of 6 years of experience as a legal assistant, preferably in insurance defense litigation.
  • Prior corporate experience is highly desirable.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with court personnel, attorneys, clients, witnesses, and outside vendors.
  • Highly proficient in MS Word, MS Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure and local court/jurisdiction rules.
  • Ability to identify urgency and prioritize tasks accordingly, with strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a strong understanding of legal terminology and procedures.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
