About the Opportunity

We are seeking enthusiastic individuals with a background in environmental sciences, biology, and/or analytical chemistry to join our team as Student CO-OP Research Assistants. As part of a team of scientists and technicians, you will work under the direction of the Environmental Research Associate - Indigenous-led Projects to assist with capacity building initiatives in Indigenous communities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Travel to Indigenous communities and field locations as part of a NAIT team to assist with capacity building initiatives.
  • Participate in collaborative work with Indigenous learners in both the field and within NAIT's laboratory environments.
  • Communicate results and observations effectively between project teams and community partners as needed.
  • Perform general laboratory tasks including solution preparation, experimental setup, glassware cleaning, basic field, and analytical equipment maintenance.
  • Conduct routine testing of freshwater samples using standard procedures for pH, conductivity, TSS, Ion Chromatography and assist researchers with nonstandard testing using various chromatography and spectroscopy techniques.
  • Assist in maintaining laboratory in optimal state including general housekeeping, chemical inventory/handling, and updating safety protocols and hazard assessments.
  • Data entry, data processing, and presentation creation using Word, Excel, and Power Point

  • Effective time management and planning
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Qualifications:

  • Must be able to work full-time from September 2024 to August 2025.
  • Must live or study in Alberta
  • Must be legally entitled to work and study in Canada
  • Must be able to work unsupervised as needed, and participate in team culture
  • Must enjoy working outdoors
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Class 5 driver's license and willingness to travel is an asset

Remuneration: $17.48 per hour, plus 12% in lieu of statutory holidays and vacation pay (Classification- Student Research Assistant l).

This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
