About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer to lead our facilities maintenance team at Novelis Kingston Works. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for ensuring the reliability and efficiency of our mechanical systems, including fire prevention systems, HVAC, building envelope, water, sewer, gas, cooling water systems, steam, doors, docks, pump house, tank farm/waste.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and direction to the facilities maintenance team to achieve maintenance, reliability, and improvement objectives.
  • Evaluate equipment, troubleshoot, and work to build efficiencies and best practices.
  • Identify and problem-solve all mechanical facility-related issues.
  • Support the development, installation, and commissioning of capital expenditures.
  • Use strong analytical and critical thinking skills to recommend and construct design changes for improvements on a vast array of equipment.
  • Be a role model within the team by consistently demonstrating safe acts and following Novelis policies and procedures.
  • Ensure all equipment recommended, repaired, or modified meets all company and government safety regulations to ensure the wellbeing of employees.
  • Apply engineering expertise to facilities systems.
  • Conduct regular inspections of facilities to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with local and federal regulations.
  • Support production needs through crane maintenance in tight, frequently revised schedules and/or equipment failures.
  • Build respectful and collaborative relationships with tradespeople, peers, and leadership.
  • Continuously grow knowledge of engineering and maintenance principles and practice, share new developments and knowledge with the team.
  • Apply principles of continuous improvement methodology on a routine basis to understand root causes and craft effective corrective actions.
  • Advocate for short- and long-term capital projects to align with the business plan by preparing and presenting requests, including sound financial analysis/justification, for management approval.
  • Compare alternatives and ensure safety, quality, cost, reliability, and environmental improvements are all considered.
  • Provide technical support to a team of unionized tradespeople and operators to troubleshoot, address preventive maintenance, and engineering problems.
  • Lead various projects, completing them on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
  • Work with external resources to facilitate contractor management, build vendor relations, and connect with engineering firms.
  • Develop SOPs and training programs on processes and equipment for tradespeople and operators.
  • Be available as needed to support operations at a 24/7 facility.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • 5+ years of work experience in a field of mechanical engineering and facilities-specific experience, considered an asset.
  • Proficient in the fundamentals of reliability such that the position can help establish appropriate PMs and PdMs for process equipment.
  • Ability to write specifications and facilitate bids from contractors and suppliers.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) skills; ability and willingness to connect with all levels in the organization.
  • Proven excellent leadership skills through past experiences.
  • Desire to take initiative and develop a proactive relationship with team members through follow-up, understanding their needs, and encouraging a collaborative relationship.
  • Ability to coordinate and prioritize responsibilities; to balance multiple tasks at once without sacrificing attention to detail.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and perform root-cause-analysis on equipment and process issues, related to the mechanical area.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary contractors during project execution.
  • Knowledge of, and experience, designing and making minor changes to drawings in Solid Works and AutoCAD.
  • Must be flexible and able to operate in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Strong digital literacy and experience with Microsoft Office 365, SAP, Solid Works, AutoCAD, Inventor, or other 3D modeling software.
