About the Role

The Special Constable plays a vital role in maintaining law and order on University of Waterloo property. This position requires a strong sense of community policing, with a focus on providing an environment of the highest possible security for members of a diverse university community and its visitors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain law and order on University of Waterloo property, ensuring the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors.
  • Enforce laws and regulations, including the Criminal Code of Canada, provincial statutes, and City of Waterloo by-laws.
  • Prevent and deter crime through regular patrols and proactive engagement with the community.
  • Respond to calls for service 24/7, providing emergency assistance and support as needed.
  • Handle complaints and incidents, resolving issues through mediation and conflict resolution techniques.
  • Conduct thorough investigations into incidents and crimes, gathering evidence and preparing reports.
  • Collaborate with other emergency services, providing backup and support when needed.
  • Stay up-to-date on policing techniques and university policies through ongoing training and professional development.

Requirements

  • Degree from a recognized Police College or Academy, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Current standard level of first aid certification and basic rescuer level CPR.
  • Successful completion of the Ontario Association Chiefs of Police (OACP) Constable Selection System (CSS) Certificate.
  • Valid Ontario G class Driver's License or higher, with a clean driving record.
  • Previous experience in a police and/or security environment is an asset.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, overtime, and weekends as required.
  • Excellent communication and human relations skills, with the ability to relate to students and a diverse population.
  • Sound judgment, problem-solving, and organizational skills, with attention to detail and analytical abilities.
