The Federation of Canadian Municipalities is seeking a skilled Communications Advisor to join our team. As a key member of our Communications team, you will play a vital role in developing and leading strategies and tactical communications plans to support and further corporate and political objectives.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and lead strategies, identify tactics, and develop messaging in support of FCM's communications and advocacy goals.
- Create written products designed to carry FCM's core advocacy messages, liaising with policy and programs colleagues where appropriate, to ensure content is on message, accurate, suitable for various tailored audiences, and reflective of FCM's work.
- Assist with FCM's event promotion and marketing drive, working collaboratively with other FCM units to determine messaging, write promotional materials, and provide input on design, as needed.
- Produce regular member communications, to be distributed to members nationwide. Propose topics for the editorial calendar, oversee approvals, and translation.
- Develop a keen understanding of the FCM's tone, voice, brand, messaging style, while ensuring it is consistent with FCM's corporate and political objectives.
- As required, liaise with and oversee a roster of freelancers.
- Provide day-to-day writing and copy-editing support, as required.
- Post-secondary education in communications, journalism, marketing, or other relevant field or a combination of education and experience that would be considered equivalent.
- Five to six (5-6) years of professional writing experience and communication campaigns execution.
- Strong project management abilities; capable of prioritizing and planning multiple projects simultaneously, under tight time constraints, and within budget parameters.
- Strong time management skills and ability to work effectively under pressure, meet tight deadlines, prioritize, and deal with uncertainty in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated experience using key messages to construct engaging narratives that further corporate and political objectives.
- Ability to develop clear, concise, and engaging content that's tailored to specific audiences, reflecting relevant political sensitivities.
- Experience as a copy editor adhering to organizational style guidelines, as well as voice and tone.
- Understanding of Canadian municipal and federal political structures and issues considered an asset.
- Experience working with elected officials or senior corporate figures considered an asset.
- Experience of member-based communications or national event promotion considered an asset.
- Strong strategic thinking and visioning skills considered an asset.
- Thorough working knowledge of MS Office applications used for word processing and presentation creation (Sharepoint, Outlook, Word, and Adobe).
- Bilingualism (English and French) is an asset.
