Cardiac Surgery Clinical Assistant

Nova Scotia Health is seeking highly skilled and dedicated Associate Physicians to join our team in the Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiac Surgery. As an Associate Physician, you will work under the supervision of a fully licensed physician to provide medical care to patients. This is a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience and contribute to the delivery of high-quality patient care.
Clinical Responsibilities- Assist at surgical procedures and perform appropriate portions of the procedure within the scope of your demonstrated competence, under direct attending supervision.
- Work with attending staff, nurses, and Residents, and other members of the health care team in the development of the overall patient care program.
- Communicate with patients, families, referring, and family physicians concerning patient management plans.
- Perform and document admission history and physical examinations, progress notes, discharge summaries, death certificates, etc.
- Manage the day-to-day care of patients, including writing medical orders on charts and responding to emergencies, in consultation with attending staff.
- Perform procedures within the scope of your demonstrated competence, including insertion of peripheral intravenous lines, initiation of intravenous medication, taking blood samples for diagnostic purposes or arterial blood gases, insertion of Foley catheters, insertion and removal of intra-aortic balloon pumps, insertion of central lines, arterial lines, insertion and removal of chest tubes, intubation and management of ventilation, adjustment of inotropes and vasopressors.
- Arrange consultations with other departments for care and investigation.
- Follow through on investigations and arrange follow-up outpatient visits.
- Be recertified for procedures within the scope of your demonstrated competencies.
- Attend educational sessions and rounds as time permits. Interact with and orientate clinical clerks and PGY1's, new to the Cardiac Surgery Service.
- Participate in on-call responsibilities of the service including consultations.
We are looking for individuals who meet the requirements to obtain a Clinical Assistant License from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia. You must have obtained (in writing) Review of Qualifications from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia prior to application deadline. Please upload this with your application. You must also have CMPA coverage, ACLS certification, and a good command of written and spoken English. You must be able to promote and maintain good interpersonal skills. Completion of the equivalence of a rotating internship and postgraduate training and experience in Neurosurgery are considered assets. You must be able to sit, stand, walk, and perform duties as outlined above. You must also be able to deal with stressful situations. Competencies in other languages are an asset, with French preferred.
Hours- Three Permanent Full-Time positions
- 96 hours bi-weekly
$51.67 – 65.80 hourly
