About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Court Officer (Judicial Support) to join our team at the Government of Nova Scotia. As a key member of our Court Services Division, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of our courts and providing exceptional support to our judiciary.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and manage court hearings at all levels of court, ensuring timely and efficient proceedings.
  • Provide confidential administrative and organizational support to the judiciary, including preparing complex orders and decisions.
  • Act as the clerk of the court, including jury sittings, and perform quasi-judicial duties as a Staff Justice of the Peace.
  • Train and mentor new staff in day-to-day operational activities.
  • Record and transcribe court proceedings using electronic recording equipment.
  • Facilitate all aspects of court hearings, including operating technology to support virtual or hybrid court models.
  • Exercise care and control of exhibits, including transportation and transfer to the Exhibit Custodian.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • Two years of post-secondary education in a related discipline, plus five years of related experience in a legal environment.
  • Excellent keyboarding, data entry, and transcribing skills, as well as proficiency in MS Office products and virtual platforms such as MS Teams and video conferencing.
  • Superior organizational abilities, strong prioritization skills, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Fairness and impartiality, with a high degree of confidentiality, when dealing with clients and sensitive information.
  • A sound working knowledge of legal documents, forms, court procedures, and legal terminology.
