Job Title: Legal Counsel, Privacy

The University of Waterloo is seeking a highly skilled Legal Counsel, Privacy to join our team. As a key member of our Legal and Immigration Services (LIS) team, you will provide expert legal advice and guidance to senior leaders, faculties, schools, and administrative units across the institution.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide strategic legal guidance on privacy-related matters, including Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) compliance and risk management.
  • Develop and maintain processes, systems, and strategic direction for FIPPA responsibilities, including privacy review and response to complaints and breaches.
  • Collaborate with external counsel to provide advice on foreign laws impacting the University's operations and international partnerships.
  • Provide legal advice on commercial issues, including contract negotiation, drafting, and review, as well as intellectual property law and administrative law principles.
  • Support the development of precedents and workflow practices for routine matters to ensure efficient use of LIS office resources.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Laws (or Juris Doctor or equivalent law degree) is required.
  • Licensed to practice law in Ontario and a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Relevant professional designation from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) or other recognized professional body is an asset.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience practicing law and providing legal advice to complex organizations.
  • 3+ years of experience working with access to information and protection of privacy responding to access requests, privacy complaints, information breaches, and inquiries from the community.

The ideal candidate will have a strong working knowledge of provincial and federal information and privacy laws, as well as higher education or other public sector experience. They will also possess excellent critical thinking skills, the ability to work independently and resourcefully, and strong communication skills to deliver clear and practical advice.
