About the Role
The Specialist in Corporate Development will perform timely, accurate, and comprehensive research and business analysis to support major growth initiatives evaluated by the company. This position will be involved in screening, analysis, and acquisition of mid to advanced stage renewable development projects as well as mergers and acquisitions (M&A) that will support the company's growth objectives.
This role provides financial modelling and analysis to support the Corporate Development group and works closely with project managers to ensure all inputs to financial models have been agreed to and signed off.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide financial analysis and other analytical support on M&A and mid to advanced stage development acquisition activities
- Ensure accuracy of financial models and input from sponsoring project managers
- Analyze corporate impacts of investment decisions for both TransAlta and its partners
- Develop presentation packages, bid packages, and reports for projects
- Support transaction functions such as data room management, Q&A coordination, and cross-functional due diligence efforts
- Perform ad hoc analysis, including creation of financial models, analysis of business trends, and research to support corporate strategy development
- Analyze operating models for existing TransAlta assets and supporting decisions on outsourcing vs insourcing models
- Lead divestures of existing TransAlta assets and evaluating creative structures to unlock value from the portfolio
- Lead M&A transactions from inception through due-diligence, approvals, signing, and closing
Requirements and Qualifications
- 5+ years' experience in corporate strategy and planning/analysis role
- Degree and/or professional designation in business, finance, economics, or applicable field
- Previous M&A experience or investment banking experience preferred
- CFA preferred or working towards CFA
- Expert skills in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
- Strong financial background with understanding of key financial metrics, mergers and acquisitions, and financial statement analysis
- Experience in financial spreadsheet modelling
- Background in power generation an asset
- Knowledge of TransAlta, its assets, processes, and strategy an asset
- Ability to handle multiple projects at various stages and prioritize tasks with Manager assistance
- Well-developed understanding of valuation techniques and financial metrics
- Ability to work independently and produce results within agreed upon deadlines
- Cross-functional communication skills
- Ability to develop strong working relationships with people at all organizational levels
- Highly motivated individual willing to dedicate time necessary to deliver results under pressure
