Job Description

This permanent part-time position involves working 24 hours per week. As a Child Development Specialist, you will be responsible for planning and delivering childcare programs, assisting with the scheduling of childcare spots, and interacting with parents regarding available space.

You will also provide on-going feedback and engagement with parents on their child's development and behavior, ensure confidentiality and record information as required, and participate in ongoing training in trauma and infant/child mental health.

In addition, you will provide emergency first aid, complete reports and files incident reports as required, prepare healthy snacks, and maintain facility cleanliness and tidiness.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and implement age-based activities promoting social interaction and personal development
  • Schedule childcare spots and interact with parents regarding availability
  • Provide feedback and engagement with parents on child development and behavior
  • Ensure confidentiality and record information as required
  • Participate in ongoing training in trauma and infant/child mental health
  • Provide emergency first aid and complete reports and files incident reports
  • Maintain facility cleanliness and tidiness

Working Conditions:

  • This is a permanent part-time position working 24 hours per week
  • Typical working conditions are in a childcare room and an office for administrative work
  • The job requires lifting/moving equipment and children, room set-up, active involvement with children for most of the day, occasional computer work, cleaning the facility, and putting up wall displays
  • No travel required for this position

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • High School diploma plus a specialized course in Early Childhood Education Assistant or equivalent (i.e., Child and Youth Worker, full ECE)
  • Registered Early Childhood Education Assistant or registered with equivalent association (ie, Child and Youth Worker Association)
  • Certificate in Infant/Child Mental Health an asset
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification within 2 years

Experience and Knowledge:

  • More than three months prior related experience, including experience in a childcare environment
  • Trauma-informed and infant-child mental health and Brain Story training an asset

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Attentive listening, preparing materials, crafts, program planning
  • Attention to detail, problem-solving, and analytical skills
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army
