Job Summary

The Senior Director of Planned Giving will lead the coordination and advancement of the university's planned gifts program, reporting to the Assistant Vice Chancellor, Planned Giving. This senior-level position is within the Office of Planned Giving and is part of the Development Vertical. The ideal candidate will be a highly experienced professional with excellent interpersonal skills and gift planning experience, interacting with key university constituencies and requiring occasional travel.

Key Responsibilities
  • Responsible for university planned and deferred gift activity, including qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of a portfolio of 40 donors and prospects in an assigned geographic region.
  • May assist in major and principal gift solicitations as warranted, with specific gift production and donor contact goals established on an annual basis.
  • Will serve as a liaison to the Principal Gifts Team, assisting with planned giving strategies for top-level prospects and donors.
  • Responsible for assisting the principal gifts team and other gift officers with qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of principal gift prospects.
  • Will work closely with all levels of development officers in a territory to ensure short and long-term fundraising success and coordinate with the territory Executive Director in reaching the planned giving total for the territory.
  • Will serve as a resource for all planned giving activities and presentations.
  • Will work closely with subject matter experts in the Philanthropic Strategy Vertical to meet the fundraising priorities of the Danforth Campus schools, Medicine, programs, university priorities, university initiatives, and Principal Gifts team to identify, cultivate, solicit, close, and steward principal gift prospects.
  • Will serve as a senior leader/mentor within the Office of Planned Giving via management of assigned projects, including UA-wide planned giving projects and initiatives.
  • Will assist the Assistant Vice Chancellor, Planned Giving, with strategic planning, projections, and summaries and reports.
  • Will help to create and foster a culture of collaboration and teamwork that celebrates outcomes, builds individual and team capacity, and ensures that WashU UA is a preferred workplace.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Relevant experience (6 years).
  • Ability and flexibility to work outside of the normal workday/office hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Experience within a complex university, national coordinating organization, or organization with sub-units and complex reporting relationships.
  • Planned giving specific experience, including significant personal involvement with planned gift solicitation.
  • Demonstrated expertise with personal solicitations and the capital gift process.
  • Familiarity with modern university capital gift techniques (moves management, tracking systems, gift tables, solicitation timing and status mechanisms, capital and inclination ratings, prospect management grids, etc.).
  • Experience providing 'in-house' development advice and/or counsel to related units within a complex organization.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse constituents (board members, chancellor, vice chancellors, deans, school, or unit directors, etc.).
  • Outstanding ability helping to plan, coordinate, and manage capital development projects and campaigns.
