The Lead Structural Steel Estimator plays a pivotal role in guiding the Estimating Department's resources, offering mentorship and support across various disciplines. This position involves a thorough analysis of tender documents and the preparation of precise cost estimates and proposals for client submission. The Lead Estimator collaborates with all support teams and clients to ensure the delivery of detailed and accurate estimates.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a mentor and resource for fellow estimators.
  • Assist in organizing departmental resources effectively.
  • Support departmental management in the absence of the Estimating Manager.
  • Provide performance feedback and insights to the Estimating Manager.
  • Collect and maintain up-to-date data on costs related to structural and miscellaneous steel, labor, erection, and installation.
  • Identify competitive rates through comprehensive cost analysis.
  • Review proposal specifications and drawings to ascertain the scope of work and estimate content.
  • Quantify all elements of the tender documents, including requirements, specifications, and project drawings.
  • Solicit supplier quotations for materials, equipment, and subcontractor services.
  • Participate in pre-tender meetings, estimate reviews, and tender submissions.
  • Prepare detailed and professional estimates by calculating material quantities, equipment, and labor rates.
  • Recommend various scenarios based on cost, engineering quality, or material availability.
  • Advise management on cost and schedule variations, material availability, and other construction-related factors.
  • Compile final estimate summaries that comprehensively address scope and pricing.
  • Review estimates with management as necessary.
  • Submit completed tenders in a timely manner in collaboration with central closing.
  • Prepare revisions for construction tenders and assess cost impacts.
  • Possess knowledge of relevant municipal, provincial, and federal regulations.
  • Contribute to the evaluation of annual bid success rates through post-bid analyses.
  • Maintain positive relationships with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers.

When Leading a Bid:

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating estimators across multiple disciplines.
  • Leading progress and closing meetings with clients.
  • Ensuring all appendices are accurately completed and included.
  • Managing the filing structure for bids.
  • Collaborating with Shared Services to ensure compliance and project success.
  • Preparing turnover packages and supporting project managers post-award.
  • Including necessary appendices such as schedules, methodologies, and labor rates.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Engage in TESC estimating training programs.
  • Prepare revisions for construction tenders and assess cost impacts.
  • Maintain historical data in the TESC database.
  • Attend industry conferences and networking events as required.
  • Seek input for continuous improvement in cost identification and accuracy.
  • Review budget and project profitability with the supervision and project team as needed.

Qualifications:

  • College diploma or training related to construction.
  • 5 to 10 years of experience in construction management and estimating.
  • Strong understanding of fabrication, assembly, installation, and dismantling of structural steel.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Financial acumen and understanding of budget structures.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and without supervision.
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on value-added tasks.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in MS Excel and other relevant software.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
