Job Description

We are currently seeking a Senior Financial Analyst to join our team at our Calgary office location. As a key member of our Corporate Services department, you will be responsible for providing expert financial analysis, modeling, and insights to support our business decisions. Reporting to the Corporate Controller, your role will involve developing detailed financial models, evaluating scenarios, and guiding strategic planning initiatives. You will assess investments, capital expenditures, and associated risks while driving cost optimization efforts. By monitoring key performance indicators and preparing comprehensive reports, you will ensure Startec's financial health and the successful execution of business strategies.

Key Responsibilities

Our Senior Financial Analyst will be responsible for:
  • Analyzing financial data to identify trends, patterns, and improvement opportunities.
  • Using statistical methods and ratios to assess financial health.
  • Performing variance analysis, explaining deviations from budgets and forecasts to management.


Budgeting and Forecasting

You will collaborate with departments to develop accurate annual budgets and periodic forecasts, ensuring alignment with organizational goals. You will monitor performance against budgets/forecasts, analyze variances, and provide actionable recommendations to stakeholders. Additionally, you will prepare and present budget and forecast analyses, advising on strategies to realign performance with targets. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) will be defined, tracked, and analyzed to assess financial performance, operational efficiency, and business success.

Financial Modeling and Investment Analysis

You will develop and maintain accurate financial models to simulate scenarios and project outcomes. Integrating key financial data, variables, and assumptions into models, you will ensure data integrity and accuracy. Conducting sensitivity analyses, you will evaluate the impact of variable changes on financial results. Assessing capital and cash flow structures, you will provide insights into their financial implications. Using financial models, you will analyze the outcomes of various strategies and decisions on overall financial health. Furthermore, you will conduct due diligence on investment opportunities and capital expenditure proposals, evaluating financial statements, market trends, and industry benchmarks to identify risks and returns. Performing risk-return assessments, you will quantify potential benefits and risks. Creating investment-specific models incorporating financial metrics, cash flows, and projected returns, you will generate and present financial analyses and reports to stakeholders, offering recommendations for informed decision-making.

Cost Analysis and Optimization

You will analyze cost structures to identify inefficiencies, waste, and opportunities for optimization. Identifying bottlenecks and redundancies driving higher costs, you will quantify potential cost savings and efficiency gains for each initiative. Estimating ROI for proposed process improvements and cost-saving efforts, you will provide recommendations to maximize savings without compromising quality. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, you will design and implement cost-reduction initiatives. Monitoring KPIs related to cost control and operational effectiveness, you will generate reports to track progress, trends, and areas requiring attention.

Qualifications

To succeed in this role, you must possess a Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field. CFA, CPA designation is considered an asset. You should have proven experience as a Financial Analyst or in a similar analytical role. Strong knowledge of financial analysis techniques, financial modeling, and forecasting is essential. Proficiency in financial software and systems (e.g., Excel, financial planning software, ERP systems) is required. Familiarity with financial principles, accounting standards, and financial statement analysis is necessary. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and accuracy, are mandatory. Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders, are required. Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams and build effective relationships is essential. A proactive mindset, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, is necessary. Knowledge of industry trends, market analysis, and competitive intelligence is beneficial. Strong business acumen and understanding of financial implications on business decisions are required.
