Job Title: Principal

Job Summary:

The Sault Community Career Centre is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal to lead our team at the Garden River First Nation Elementary School. As a Principal, you will be responsible for creating a cohesive, stimulating, and enriching learning environment for students from kindergarten to Grade 3.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and promote high standards and expectations for staff and students for academic performance.
  • Manage, evaluate, and supervise effective and clear procedures for the operation and functioning of the school.
  • Supervise instructional programs, evaluating lesson plans and observing classes on a regular basis.
  • Establish procedures for the evaluation and selection of instructional materials.
  • Ensure a safe, orderly environment that encourages students to take responsibility for their actions.
  • Establish a professional rapport with students and staff through the display of high ethical and professional behavior.
  • Coordinate testing of annual evaluations.
  • Notify appropriate agencies and/or personnel where there is evidence of abuse, neglect, severe medical or social conditions.
  • Continuously work on school improvement.
  • Establish procedures and assume responsibility for the health, safety, and wellbeing of students and staff.
  • Communicate regularly with parents, seeking support and advice so as to create a cooperative learning environment.
  • Organize and supervise procedures for identifying and addressing special needs of students.
  • Nurture both students and teachers to achieve their greatest potential academically, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
  • Maintain accurate attendance and Ontario Student Record files and ensure safekeeping according to procedure.
  • Collaborate in the planning and implementation of the school's strategic planning and long-term goals.
  • Arrange for professional development sessions and coordinate yearly school year calendars.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree or higher with Principal qualifications is considered an asset.
  • OCT Certificate in good standing.
  • Detailed resume demonstrating teaching experience (5 years minimum).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Ontario Curriculum.
  • Experience working with First Nation children and students.
  • Familiarity with school administrative tasks and learning methods.
  • Ability to use good judgement in assessing difficult situations.
  • Flexibility required to keep pace with an ever-changing environment.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and knowledge of the First Nation cultural values and traditions.
  • Ability to build a trusting relationship with students, teachers, and parents.
  • Ability to be consistent and display a positive/helpful attitude.
  • Willingness to accept changes in work practices and technology.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a team.
  • Excellent organizational skills, time management skills, interpersonal and communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent computer skills (including MS Word, Word Perfect, Excel, Internet, Email, Outlook).
  • Ability to report for work as scheduled.
  • Must undergo a criminal record check with vulnerable sector prior to employment.
  • May require travel to other First Nations or local school boards at times.
