Valard, a leading utility contractor in Canada and part of the Quanta Group, serves as head of the Valard Group of Companies. With full-service capabilities for transmission, distribution, substations, foundations, telecommunications, and renewable energy, we cater to various sectors.

The Legal Counsel will play a crucial role in assisting with all legal matters impacting our organization, including contract negotiations, litigation, supply chain management, construction projects, human resources, and corporate departments. Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing practical advice on contractual terms to Contract Managers during pre-bid stages.
  • Advising Executive Management on contractual risks.
  • Negotiating contracts with clients and supporting Contract Managers with vendor and supplier negotiations.
  • Offering support and advice on claims and issues related to construction projects.
  • Delivering legal training to business units as required.
  • Collaborating with internal HR teams on employment matters (e.g., employment contracts, policies).
  • Providing guidance on a wide range of legal topics associated with ongoing and planned business unit operations.
  • Preparing and drafting various agreements.
  • Ensuring day-to-day activities align with laws and regulations.
  • Identifying and managing risk for the organization, leading initiatives to mitigate risk when possible.
  • Directing outside counsel on corporate and litigation matters.
  • Undertaking special projects as needed.
  • Communicating with executive teams and management on relevant matters.
  • Promoting understanding of legal expectations and enforcing organizational standards.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements

We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B or J.D) degree.
  • Membership in a provincial law society.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in corporate commercial law or litigation.
  • Construction law experience is an asset.
