Special Education Assistant

At School District #35, we are committed to creating inclusive learning environments that cater to the diverse needs of our students. As a Special Education Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting the academic and social development of deaf and hard of hearing students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpreting in sign language for various school functions, including classroom activities and assemblies
  • Working one-on-one or in small groups with students to reinforce previously taught concepts through review, repetition, and demonstration
  • Implementing and monitoring behavior management programs, including observation, record-keeping, and follow-up
  • Tracking student progress and communicating with teachers and other support staff
  • Ensuring the proper functioning of hearing aids and auditory equipment

Requirements:

  • Grade 12 graduation and possession of a Special Education Teacher Assistant Certificate or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Proficiency in sign language at an intermediate level (Level 6) and ability to transcribe print materials into Braille format
  • Ability to work effectively with students, teachers, and other support staff to create a positive and inclusive learning environment
